An 18V LXT battery fits compatible LXT tools, including 36V (18V X2) LXT tools that use two packs. A 40V max XGT battery fits XGT tools, including 80V max XGT X2 tools. Neither battery type is designed to run tools from the other platform. Makita’s 12V max CXT line is separate as well.
First, identify the platform—not just the brand
Makita builds several cordless ecosystems. The battery shape, electronic communication, output requirements, and tool connection all matter. Seeing “Makita” on both products is not enough to make them a match.
The established system
18V LXT
LXT is Makita’s broad 18V slide-battery platform. One LXT pack can be moved among compatible 18V LXT tools, and two matching LXT packs power specific 36V/18V X2 LXT products. It does not fit XGT tools.
Built for higher demand
40V max XGT
XGT is a separate 40V max system intended for demanding applications and equipment. XGT packs fit XGT tools; two packs are used on certain 80V max XGT X2 products. They do not fit or power 18V LXT tools.
The compact line
12V max CXT
CXT is Makita’s compact 12V max platform. CXT batteries fit CXT products only. They are not compatible with LXT or XGT tools, and the ADP10 does not convert them for use with an XGT charger.

COMMON POINT OF CONFUSION
The ADP10 is a charger adapter—not a tool battery adapter.
Makita’s ADP10 lets an 18V LXT battery charge on a compatible 40V max XGT charger. That can simplify a mixed LXT-and-XGT charging station. But it does not make an LXT battery capable of running an XGT tool, and it does not let an XGT battery run an LXT tool.
Before using an adapter, confirm the exact charger and battery pairing in your regional Makita documentation. Specifications and supported packs can vary by model and market.
Which Makita platform should you invest in?
The better platform is usually the one that supports the tools you actually need—not necessarily the one with the larger voltage number.
If you already own LXT
Staying in LXT is often the most economical route when the LXT range covers your workload. Your existing batteries and chargers retain value across compatible LXT tools. Add XGT only when an XGT-specific tool meaningfully solves a job requirement.
If you need XGT capability
Budget for XGT batteries and an XGT charger alongside the tool. Treat this as a second battery ecosystem, not an extension of your LXT packs. For high-demand work, that extra investment may be justified by the XGT tool range.
What about third-party batteries and adapters?
Do not assume an aftermarket adapter makes two battery systems safely interchangeable. A battery-to-tool connection has to manage physical fit, voltage, current demand, thermal protection, and electronic communication. An adapter that merely makes a pack click into place may bypass safeguards the tool and battery were designed to use.
For the most predictable fit, runtime, charging behavior, and warranty support, use genuine Makita batteries and chargers matched to the platform shown on the tool. If a compatibility claim is not documented by Makita for your exact product, treat it as unsupported.
